Uttered By Water
Oil on linen | 60x48
I worked on this piece on and off again for ten years. It began as a proposal for a commission that I didn’t get for law offices in San Francisco overlooking SF Harbor.
The swirl of water which was the primary motif, and not very well fleshed out, invited me to overlay images drawn at Itchitucknie Springs in Norther Florida, a very magical place where the aquifers bubble up from holes in the bedrock.
Later I thought about the pond at the center of the forest in The Iron John story, made famous by the poet Robert Bly. The painting wouldn’t resolve until I undermined the spatial cohesion with flat colors and shapes that suggest the whole thing as an elaborate stage set, in my mind anyway.
