William Eckhardt Kohler was born in Boston, MA, and studied at the University of Pennsylvania before deciding to take time off to work and develop an art-making practice, continuing his studies at the Maryland Institute, College of Art and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (B.F.A., 1985, M.F.A., 1987). Remaining in Chicago, he taught painting, drawing and art history at the American Academy of Art, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago city colleges, and The University of Indiana North West.

In 2011 he relocated to New York City for ten years returning to Chicago in 2020. His work has been exhibited in galleries and art fairs around the world and was most recently represented by Linda Warren Projects in Chicago, Brian Morris Gallery in New York City and Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC. He has written about art and exhibitions for The Huffington Post and Two Coats of Paint.

William Kohler has been honored with a Pollock-Krasner award in 2020, and was the recipient of a Sharpe-Walentas Studio Residency in Brooklyn for the year 2022-23.
